Gen Z is the leading generation now. With a big chunk of them in their early to mid-20s, it’s time they explore the world of dating apps and relationships. Dating apps are not uncommon nowadays, there’s a dating app for everyone and everything, so it’s normal to not just have the most popular-slash-boring dating apps like Tinder or Bumble.
More niched apps like DOWN, Feeld, and PURE exist, and it’s a more fun way to let these youngsters explore their sexualities.
DOWN recently surveyed 1000 Gen Z-ers (ages 18-24) in the US and asked: what’s important for them on a dating app and what is a dealbreaker for them in hopes of understanding the Gen Z dating lifestyle.
The Gen Z dating life: What makes the perfect dating profile?
Our first question to these Gen-Zers was: “What makes the perfect dating profile?”
This question is to figure out what’s something that Gen Z would like to see in someone’s dating profile that would make them swipe right. We took the 5 most common answers and ranked them from most to least popular (see infographic below for more details).
38% of respondents said they have to at least have 3 pictures. This is a very good point because this provides variety to show yourself from different angles, in different environments, etc. 3 pictures can give a hint on what kind of person you are, and to the right person, can be a dealbreaker.
Only a little less than that is the importance of a bio. That space where dating apps always tell you to “say something about yourself” is always the most difficult part. Most people don’t know what to write and opt to leave it blank, but you can always try to fill it in with witty or dirty pick up lines and this actually helps start the conversation!
You’d be surprised by how much cheesy pickup lines work — no matter how cheesy they are.
What the DOWN team didn’t expect, is that “verified profiles” is ranked no. 3. In this day and age where scammers seem to be everywhere, we thought verified profiles would take the number one spot. Not to worry though, here at DOWN, we have a 24/7 scammer hunter team that makes sure your experience is as safe as it can be.

Next on number 4, we have Prompts. These are questions/interests that the dating apps offer to make your profile more interesting. Especially if you have your bio blank. For example, here at DOWN, we have features such as DTX and Highlights to make your profile really stands out from the crowd.
DTX is a feature that allows users to share what they’re down to do or where they’re down to meet. The rating for these prompts range from vanilla to downright spicy, so it’s totally up to the users to share just how much or how little of their sex lives. This is one of the ways DOWN gives control to the users, whether you want to date or hookup, the choice is yours.
The other feature also available to showcase on the profile is Highlights, where users can choose a sticker to showcase what’s special about them. For example, let’s say that I’m a user and I want to highlight the fact that I like to give. In this case, I would choose the “Giver” sticker, and it will show on my profile for everyone else to see.
The least popular answer among the top 5, is Instagram connect. Many dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, and now also DOWN incorporate the ability to connect to Instagram, which means your posts (just posts, not reels) will be shown on your profile as an addition. This is a great way to show more pictures on the dating profile.

Now that you know what makes a perfect dating profile according to the Gen Z dating life, it’s time for you to actually get out there and create one yourself. If you find random suggestions on the internet weird and not trustworthy, follow these numbers! Statistics don’t lie.
Millennial VS Gen Z dating life: Same lifestyles, different timelines?
The next question DOWN asked was: “Who should text first?” and we gave three options; Men, Women, or Doesn’t matter. Taking a look from the women’s perspective, it was almost spread evenly, while most of the Gen Z men would like women to text them first.
Dating apps like Bumble only let women text first, which would be a good match for these Gen Z men, but a lot of the time women only start the conversation with a ‘hi’ which is also just as frustrating.
It is sometimes difficult to say more than just a ‘hi’ though because some people only have one picture, their name, and age on their profiles, and that’s not much material to work with. If you want other people to start the conversation — a real conversation, you need to put something else on your profile too so they can actually comment on it.

Much like the Gen Z dating lifestyle today, Millennials had- no, have to go through the same thing. Millennials are just somewhere down the road and, of course, more experienced with the dating world while Gen Zs are still testing the waters.
But everyone can tell that Gen Z is taking over for sure.
