Then they start sharing stories of an ill family member. Or the job that isn’t going right. Whatever their story is about, they start asking you for money. Then you’d think to yourself: should I send it? This could be an online dating scam, be careful with your dating online safety.
Are you being scammed? Signs of a romance scammer you should look out for.
Often the scammers in dating online apps will pretend to need the money for some sort of personal emergency. Perhaps an airport ticket they forgot to purchase or a taxi they couldn’t afford. They may also claim financial hardship caused by bad luck on their end. They may say that their business didn’t do as well as hoped. Or that they were mugged and lost all of their money. The scammer may claim that they want to travel to visit you but cannot afford it unless you are able to lend them money to cover flights or other travel expenses.
Sometimes a dating online apps scammer will send you a valuable item and ask you to resend it somewhere. They might give a reason as to why but this is just a cover-up for their illegal activity. They might even ask you to buy the goods yourself and send them somewhere else. You can even be asked to accept money into your account and then transfer the money to the next person in line.

They didn’t ask for money. Is this still signs of a romance scammer?
If your dating app matches makes an excuse or obvious attempt to avoid video chatting with you before meeting in person, it’s actually a red flag. These scammers create fake profiles which typically look very real and convincing on the surface with photos & details stolen from others’ social media accounts. This is why they avoid video chatting. Because the picture they’re using isn’t them.
If the person you’re talking to on dating online apps tells you information that is not consistent, then simply move on. If things just don’t add up, trust your gut feeling. Be wary of them and do some background research on them before even spending a lot of time with them.
